The President General (PG) of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Francis Bunu, has announced that the unit elections of the Dockworkers Branch of the union will hold before the end of April.
He made the declaration at the Emergency Branch Delegate Bye-Election held at the National Secretariat, Olodi Apapa, on Friday.
Represented by MWUN’s Deputy President General, Comrade Abubakar Bello, he said those agitating for the unit elections should be informed that they will hold before the end of April.
Speaking further, he charged the newly elected officers to use their positions for the benefit of workers, adding that the offices were not for selfish interests.
In his words: “Those who are going to hold the offices, you are here to serve the people and not to serve yourselves.
“I pray that God will guide you on how to run the office.
“I assure you that we are still receiving lists for the unit elections, which will come up before the end of this month.”
Earlier, the Deputy President of the Dockworkers Branch, Bestman Biokpo, who represented Branch President Comrade Akeem Agboola, called on the officers to use their new positions to serve the workers.
He added that, having been successfully returned, they should respect the leadership of the union as well as the constituted authorities.
“People that will emerge should use their good offices to serve the workers, respect the union leaders, and respect the constitution,” he said.
The newly elected officers include Tunde Balogun as Branch Auditor; Comrade Wasiu Ola Adeshina as Financial Secretary; Comrade Joseph Odemene as Branch Organising Secretary; and Comrade Moses Osagie as Branch Assistant Organising Secretary.
All the elected officers were returned unopposed.
MWUN’s Secretary General, Comrade Oniha Erazua, while appreciating the delegates for their swift response, added that the elections gave them eligibility to operate as branch executives.
He warned against any officer trampling on the provisions of the union’s constitution, saying the union would not condone such acts from any member.
