May Day: Merchant Navy Officers salute Nigerian workers for their resilience despite insecurity, poverty

The National President, Nigeria Merchant Navy Officers and Water Transport Senior Staff Association (NMNOWTSSA), Chief Engr. Bob Joseph Yousuo celebrates Nigerians workers, the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) workers, and workers across the globe for their strength, dignity, and resilience of labour on the heels of the Workers’ Day, 2026
The International Labour Organisation (ILO) theme of this year’s May Day celebration is “Ensuring a Healthy Psychosocial Working Environment.
In a message e-signed by by Comrade (Elder) Aleakhue John Okpono, Secretary General , NMNO/WTSSA, Yousuo appreciate Nigerian workers on their sacrifice in building the nation through resilience and hard work.
Hod words, “To every Nigerian worker: your sacrifice builds our nation daily. From the ports to the fields, classrooms to factories, your hands keep the economy moving.
“You remain the engine room/power house. We see you, we honour you, we sincerely appreciate and laud our Seafarers. we acknowledge your contributions to the world economy. Your selfless sacrifices is what keep the world together.”
He appreciated the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) and other stakeholders in the sector for being good allies.
“To our partners at the ITF and other stakeholders within and outside Nigeria thank you for standing with us in the fight for fair wages, safer workplaces, and respect for seafarers and transport workers worldwide. Solidarity remains our greatest weapon as unity shall stand and divided will fall.
“To global workers, your struggle is our struggle. As we march today, we reaffirm our commitment to unity, justice, and decent work for all. We must encourage ourselves to be courageous and firm in the fight against our common enemy-slave masters of our time.
“May this Workers’ Day remind us that progress is possible only when workers are valued, protected, and empowered.
Once again, congratulations and happy workers Day,” he submitted
The union’s leader decried however decried the spate of insecurity and poverty in Nigeria saying they are the bane of decent work in the country.
He called on the government to expedite actions on curtailing the anomalies in the land.
