Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Fidet Okhiria has said despite activities of vandals on the railway track, patronage is on the increase.
He therefore assured passengers of maximum standard saying the Corporation has provided mechanism to stop vandalism on 5he rail tracks.
The NRC helmsman gave the assurance on Monday during in a media parley at the Corporation’s headquarters in Lagos.
Okhiria who raised that alarm how vandals engage officers of the Nigeria Police and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, maintained that NRC operations are undeterred by such menace.
He added that the management of the Corporation had started sensitising all the communities along railway corridors on the implications of vandalising railway equipments.
He quipped that the Ministry of Transportation has provided six patrol vehicles to assist security operatives but noted that vehicles cannot move along the tracks and that motorcycles would be provided for effective monitoring of the facilities.
He said, “What we see now along the track corridors is that people even come there with arms, they exchange fire with police and Civil Defence.
“The vandalism along rail track is not affecting operations, our patronage is still going up and we have advised all the train operators not to stop while on movement.
“We also educate the train operators not to stop even when they see someone laying on the train track because you don’t know what they are planning.
“We are liaising with various security authorities to provide necessary coverage for the Corporation,” he stated.
