The National President of the Nigerian Merchant Navy Officers and Water Transport Senior Staff Association (NMNOWTSSA), Chief Bob Joseph Yousuo has felicitated with Nigerian Muslim seafarers, inland waterways workers, cadets, and maritime professionals on the occasion of Eid al-Adha

In a statement signed by Comrade Elder Aleakhue John Okpono, Secretary General, NMNOWTSSA, the union leader said that the sallah period commemorated the obedience, sacrifice, and unwavering faith of Prophet Ibrahim .

He added that the period reminded people that true success lies in submission to God, in standing firm on truth, and in sacrificing personal comfort for a higher purpose.

“As seafarers, you live this lesson daily, many of you will spend this sacred day far from home, onboard vessels navigating the Gulf of Guinea, the Atlantic, and international waters. While families gather for prayer, slaughter, and celebration, you keep watch, maintain engines, and ensure cargo and passengers move safely.

“Your absence from home is a sacrifice that keeps the global and Nigeria’s economy alive and connects our nation to the world. The sweat of your labour, the discipline of your watchkeeping, and the patience you show in isolation are acts of service that align with the spirit of this season.

“Islam as a religion of peace teaches patience and excellence in all that we do. Continue to uphold these values. Your work is not only a profession when done with sincerity but it is a submission

“NMNOWTSSA sees you, honors you, and stands with you. We pray that God accepts your sacrifices, protects your vessels, and returns you safely to your families in health and peace.

“We express our gratitude to our ITF Muslim Seafarers globally for your unwavering solidarity with Nigerian seafarers and maritime workers. Your interventions on abandonment, wage theft, and unsafe working conditions have given hope to many of our members.

“We reaffirm our commitment to work with the ITF in advancing the global agenda for decent work, fair contracts, and a harassment-free workplace at sea. The 2026 global theme of dignity and respect for seafarers resonates deeply with our association’s mandate and with the Islamic principle of justice for all.

“To our partners in government, particularly the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency [NIMASA] and the Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority [NIWA], we urge continued collaboration in ensuring that Nigerian Muslim seafarers can observe their faith freely, even while on duty. This includes provision for prayer times, access to halal food where practicable, and protection from religious discrimination onboard vessels.

“NMNOWTSSA under my watch remains resolute in defending your rights and advancing your welfare. On this season, we renew our pledge on Rights and Welfare,

Safety and Dignity, Professional Development, Unity and Brotherhood through signing of CBAs.

“To our Muslim members: Let the spirit of sacrifice and obedience guide your conduct both at sea and ashore. Represent Islam and Nigeria with integrity, discipline, and professionalism. Be ambassadors of good character wherever you go.

“To shipowners and operators: Recognize that a respected and well-cared-for workforce is a productive workforce. Invest in your crew’s welfare, respect their faith, pay wages appropriately and comply with national and international labour standards.

“To NIMASA, ensures COCs are released on time and automate all systems to make them seamless and reduce face to face contacts to the bearest minimal. Make seaman booklets available all times. Also to ensure all shipping companies have CBAs in their respective companies in line with the NJIC.

“May Allah accept our fasting, prayers, and sacrifices.

May He grant ease to those in distress at sea, fishing ground and on inland waterways.

May He protect Nigerian seafarers from harm, piracy, and accidents.

May He bless your families with good health, and unity during this celebration.
