MWUN expresses worry over dangers of dilapidated quay apron to workers 

 

Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has expressed disgust at exposing lives of its members to dangers by terminal operators due to unrepaired dilapidated quay aprons at some nation’s seaports
President General of the union, Comrade Abdulwaheed Adewale Adeyanju fumed at the development saying it could lead to the union directing its members to withdraw services in such terminals.
 He gave the hint while responding to questions from journalists on Friday at the venue of collaboration press briefing between MWUN and the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) in Lagos.
Quay apron is the area in front of wharf shed where cargoes are lifted from the vessels to the terminal.
He added that the union would not look away and allowed such ugly development to take the lives.of members of the union even as he said that MWUN was a proactive group
Monarchs News learnt that a terminal in Tincan Island Port, Lagos State and another in Port Harcourt, Rivers State are in such precarious state that need urgent intervention by the government.

Recall that Minister of Transportation, Mu’Azu Sambo, who also inspected the dilapidated portion of the Tin Can Island Port quay apron recently, asked Mohammed Bello-Koko, Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority NPA, and the engineers to forward the ‘as-built’ plan of the jetty, alongside other documents to his office for immediate action.

Adeyanju while reacting to questions from the media, maintained that the union will also engage management of the NPA in furtherance to address the menacing failed infrastructure of the terminals.
