Tincan NDLEA command secures over 20 convictions of drug traffickers in six months

..as Tincan Port Manager, Sylvester Egede joins sensitisation against drug abuse.

The Tincan Special command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has said it secured the convictions of over 20 drug traffickers between January and june, 2024

Briefing journalists after the sensitisation walk to commemorate the UN day against drug abuse, the Commander of Narcotics (CN) Mohammed Abubakar in charge of the command, told journalists that the command had made several seizures of drugs as well as convictions of over twenty persons in the first half of 2024.

According to the NDLEA boss, the command has made significant efforts in the campaign against drugs in terms of sensitisation,, workshops and other means

He however acknowledged the synergy among different government agencies and other stakeholders for making the fight achievable for the operatives.

This theme of year 2024 campaign is Evidence is clear, Invest in Prevention

His words, “Today is United Nations Day against Drug Abuse and we are here to commemorate the day as it is being celebrated across the world

“Aside this annual event, we have other daily events that we celebrate like WADA and other programs like advocacy, sensitization and organizing of lectures

“For this program, we have a series of programs lined up which involved a lecture at Five Star Logistics yesterday, the sensitization of today and the grand finale holding tomorrow at Rockview Hotel.

“Here in Tincan, our record is evident, we have a lot of seizures and arrests.. Last week, we had arrest of cough drug with codeine which is over 26 tonnes.

“A lot of seizures and arrests have been made and this year, we have secured over 20 convictions of drug traffickers

“Drug abuse has physical, mental and social implications on the people. One of the social implications is broken marriages and unemployment which is the outcome of drug abuse.

“Anyone who is addicted to drug may lose his job and become a danger to the society. The best way is to prevent it.

Earlier, Sylvester Egede, Port Manager,Tincan Island Port who joined in the sensitisation walk condemned both importation and use of illicit drugs.

He quipped that the campaign was necessary in order to discourage continuous use by port users and the general public

“This is a campaign against drug abuse, we all know. In all entiroty, we condemn the use of drugs because the after effect on individuals d the society is not good. So, we are trying to discourage the use and importation

“We took out campaign to truck drivers and other port users to discourage the use of drugs.

“We are ready to support NDLEA to carry out this campaign more often than they have been doing before,” he submitted.
