The Tincan Island Special Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has called on freight forwarders to avoid being used by drug cartels who import hard drugs into the country without leaving a trace and using Innocent agents.
The Commander, Tincan Island Special Command, Commander of Narcotics (CN) Mohammed Aminu Abubakar made the appeal while receiving seized illicit drugs from Area Controller of Customs, Comptroller Dera Nnadi at the command on Friday.
According to the NDLEA boss, the syndicates who import illicit drugs into the country, do not have accurate addresses and names hence the freight agents should be careful and insist on knowing who they are dealing with.
His words, “Let me use this medium to call on clearing agents not to through ignorance, allow their companies to be used by these people.
“Where you cannot produce the owner of the consignment, you will be held responsible. These people try to be anonymous to all of us that is why they use third party.
“Their addresses and names are never accurate. We need the help of clearing agents by knowing their customers.
“We don’t want it to end with the agents, we want to know sources also, they cannot continue to be a menace to the country.”
He commended the security operatives in the port for information sharing that leads to apprehension of contrabands coming into the country.
He.described the importers of the 11 rifles, 6 pistols, heroine and other hard drugs imported through Tincan port as international syndicates.
He therefore warned against continued importation of illicit items into the country saying the agency is up to the task of taming the syndicates.
“I commend our team for the seizure for providing the information and processing it that yielded the result.
“It is the work of international syndicates across many countries. They are the same syndicated with the people at airport.
“This is a warning sign for those that will continue in their illicit trade at the port.
Some of the arms and ammunitions come with the drugs. May be you can say it is the same syndicated. They have network in different West African countries,” he submitted.
