The President of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA), Emenike Nwokeoji, has defended the recent increase in the Comprehensive Import Supervision Scheme (CISS) fee from 1% to 4% of the value of imported goods.
According to Nwokeoji, the increase is backed by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Act, 2023.
The Nigeria Customs Service has begun implementing the increased CISS fee, which is expected to generate more revenue for the government. The customs service has also introduced a new unified customs system, known as B’Odogwu, aimed at streamlining customs operations and reducing smuggling activities.
Nwokeoji assured that the increment is legal and necessary to support the customs service’s operations. He also stated that the ANLCA is in support of the increase, as it will help to improve the efficiency of customs operations.
The implementation of the increased CISS fee has sparked mixed reactions from freight forwarders, with some expressing concerns about the impact on their businesses. However, Nwokeoji has assured that the increase will ultimately benefit the industry and the economy as a whole.
