The Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Zone 2, AIG Olatoye Durosinmi has called on Nigerian journalists to reflect patriotism in their reports of the events in the country especially security reports
He made the call at a One Day Workshop jointly organised by the zone and the National Association of Online Security Publishers in Lagos on Wednesday.
He described words as eggs that when it breaks, it becomes difficult to bring together saying it is impossible for a country with negative reports to attract investors
The theme of the workshop is Report Nigeria to Rebrand Nigeria
AIG Olatoye enjoined journalists to be careful about what they publish even as he added that men of the underworld sometimes latch on some information from the media to perpetrate their crimes.
“Publication is like an egg and once you break it, you can not put it back together. Anything that is coming from your organisation should be properly edited and ensure that we place priority in the security of the country and what people hear about the country
“Nobody will invest his money where every information is negative for this reason, we must check and cross check anything we are publishing
“We must be careful about what we publish about security because of the men of the underworld. It makes them to know what is happening and latch on them to perpetrate their ills.
Earlier, the President of NAOSNP, Comrade Samson Oki quipped that journalists should be concerned about national interest
He stated that in the era where almost everybody has become a journalist due to access to smart phone, journalist should exhibit due diligence and professionalism in carrying out their noble assignments.
His words, “I feel that for us as journalists, we should be concerned about national security because almost everybody has become a journalist.
“Some people create sensation for business but a lot of bad news going on in Nigeria because of what people post on the internet..
“We are concerned about our country, it is what you post that outsiders rely on to judge the country.
“This is the essence of this event to learn and to allow out leaders tin the sector to speak to us,” he enthused..
