The Lagos state government has reaffirmed its commitment to train over 10,000 maritime truck drivers and motor boys as part of efforts towards reducing accidents on the highways .

 

 

Adekoya Hassan,  disclosed this on Tuesday during a sensitization programme organised by the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation and Lagos State Truck and Cargo Committee (LASTCOC) held at Lilypond Truck Terminal Ijora.

 

Adekoya who spoke on behalf of the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, Mr. Sola Giwa allege that 99% of accidents on the highways are as a result of  drug abuse by drivers.

 

He  lamented that the Governor of the state,Babajide Sanwo Olu frowned at road accidents and would ensure that drivers are trained towards reducing the rate of figure

 

He explained that the use of illegal substances have migrated from hard drugs to pharmaceutical products.

 

Hassan disclosed that drug abuse has led to accidents on the highways but added that the days of drug abuse by truckers would soon be over courtesy the Sanwo Olu administration.

He  stressed the need for truckers operating in  the maritime industry to be enlightened on the danger of drug abuse and that the association will continue to harp on sensitizing drivers on the importance of abstaining from any form of drugs  which in turn will reduce accidents on the Lagos roads.

He commended the Lagos state government under Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu for the initiative to sensitize truckers adding that truckers need all the support and encouragement towards ensuring a drug  free society.

 

A cross of truckers took turn to express  ill treatment from  their employers, government agencies ,hoodlums and insecurity within the port community..
