The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Wednesday called on boat operators and waterways users in Lagos to herd to the regulations of the transport mode in order to avoid casualties on the waterways
He made the cal during the launch and commissioning of 15 newly locally manufactured ferries, Omibus at Bodore jetty in Lagos.
The Governor also called on lagosians to protect the infrastructure with utmost diligence against saboteurs.
His words, “To the people of Lagos: These ferries are built for you, by you, and with your contributions. They symbolize better days ahead. As we launch them into our waterways, let us do so with collective pride and purpose. Let us continue to strive for excellence in all our endeavors. As Henry Ford once said, “Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.”
While lauding the efforts of the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), he expressed joy that the ferries were locally made and with international standards.
“I am proud to announce that these ferries were built right here in Lagos by the indigenous company Carverton Marine, under the supervision of Bureau Veritas. This not only harnesses local talent but also boosts our economy and ensures adherence to the highest safety and quality standards.
“These ferries remind us of what we can achieve together with a common goal. Let us embrace this new chapter in our transportation history with optimism and determination.
“This initiative is a testament to our commitment to creating an integrated, multimodal transportation system that makes daily commutes smoother and more seamless.
“As we launch these ferries, we reaffirm our dedication to enhancing the quality of life for all Lagosians. We are investing in infrastructure that promotes safety, reliability, and convenience, while also reflecting the modernity and ambition of Lagos State.
Earlier, in his remark, the honorable Commissioner of Transport in the state, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi expressed delight over the new feat saying it is aimed at improving transportation in the state.
According to him, the state-of-the-art amenities in the Omibus will not only ensure passengers a comfortable and secure journey but also herald a new era of convenience and efficiency in Lagos.
“The Omi-Bus Ferries project is not just about improving transportation; it is about transforming how we live and move. It is about connecting communities, fostering economic growth, and reducing the stress and congestion that often characterize our daily commutes.
“These state-of-the-art ferries, with their modern amenities and safety features, will not only ensure passengers a comfortable and secure journey but also herald a new era of convenience and efficiency in Lagos. They are a beacon of hope, promising a brighter and more convenient future for all Lagos residents.”
In his welcome address, the General Manager of LASWA, Mr. Damilola Emmanuel profusely appreciated the support of the governor for the fruition of the project
He maintained that the unveiling of the locally made ferries shows the dedicated efforts of the state to develop waterways transportation.

“The unveiling of Nigerian-made modern ferries is a testament to the dedicated efforts of the Lagos State Government in developing water transport in Lagos State.
“Lagos has always been a trailblazer in governance and standards setting, and LASWA has been aligned with this approach in setting the standards for inland waterways’ infrastructure and services across the nation.
“Our commitment to sustainable development has garnered international recognition and support, with partnerships with esteemed foreign entities such as the Future Cities Nigeria Project of the UK Government, the UK NIAF, and the ongoing Waterways Investment and Development of the Environment (WIDE-LAG, OMI-EKO Project) jointly sponsored by the European Union, European Investment Bank, French Development Agency, and the Lagos State Government.”
