The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has taken a significant step towards enhancing navigational safety on the nation’s waterways. The authority has laid water buoys from Gbajibo in Niger state to Gbajibo-Mundi in Kwara state, covering a critical stretch of the waterway.
This initiative is part of NIWA’s efforts to promote safe navigation and prevent accidents on the waterways. The buoys, which are critical markers, indicate safe navigation channels, warn of hazards, and designate protected areas. With the deployment of these buoys, the risk of accidents and collisions on the waterway has been significantly reduced.
According to reports, a total of 16 buoys were deployed, comprising 10 red-colored buoys and 6 green-colored buoys. The river, which is generally deep with a least depth of 21.3 meters, now has improved safety features, thanks to this initiative.
The Managing Director/CEO of NIWA, Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, had emphasized the importance of safety regulations and operational efficiency during the 2025 Management retreat. This initiative is a clear demonstration of NIWA’s commitment to prioritizing safety and promoting efficient navigation on the nation’s waterways.
The deployment of the water buoys is a significant milestone in NIWA’s efforts to enhance navigational safety. The authority’s proactive approach to safety is commendable, and this initiative is expected to have a positive impact on the safety of water users.
In conclusion, NIWA’s deployment of water buoys in Niger and Kwara states is a significant step towards enhancing navigational safety on the nation’s waterways. The initiative is a testament to NIWA’s commitment to prioritizing safety and promoting efficient navigation.
