NCJIFLCA Moves Against Illegal Checkpoints, Multiple Infractions at Ports and Border Corridors

By Abraham Joshua
The National Compliance Joint Taskforce of Licensed Clearing Agents (NCJIFLCA) has launched a campaign to tackle the longstanding issues of illegal checkpoints and operational abuses at Nigerian ports and border routes. Led by President High Chief Dr. Basil Chudi Nwolisa, the group aims to partner with the media to expose and eliminate these practices that have been hindering the smooth flow of trade.
The Challenges:
– Multiple Checkpoints: The numerous checkpoints by Customs and security agencies along major highways are causing significant delays and extortion. These checkpoints often result in the exploitation of truck drivers and importers, further increasing the cost of goods.
– Extortion: Truck drivers are frequently extorted, even when transporting perishable goods that should be exempt from such practices. This not only affects the livelihoods of the drivers but also impacts the availability and cost of essential goods.
– Non-Compliance with Regulations: The disregard for established compliance frameworks is another major issue. Non-compliance hinders the efficient flow of trade and creates opportunities for corruption and abuse.
– Delays in Container Deposit Refunds: Shipping companies are often slow in refunding container deposits, which further complicates trade and ties up capital that could be used more productively.
The Way Forward:
The NCJIFLCA plans to collaborate with the Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria (MARAN) to address these issues and improve the port system. By working together, they aim to create a more transparent and efficient trade environment that benefits all stakeholders.
As part of its efforts to engage stakeholders, the NCJIFLCA has invited MARAN to their third anniversary celebration on December 10, 2025, at Rockview Hotel, Festac Town. This event is expected to provide a platform for discussing the challenges facing the maritime industry and exploring solutions to these issues.
This initiative by the NCJIFLCA is a step towards addressing the systemic challenges that have long plagued Nigeria’s ports and border corridors. With the support of the media and other stakeholders, there is hope for significant improvements in the efficiency and transparency of trade operations in the country.
