The Deputy President General of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Francis Bunu Abi on Tuesday, commended the efforts of the federal government for yielding to the call by the union for payment of pensions to aged seafarers who worked with the defunct Nigerian National Shipping Line (NNSL)
He gave the commendation at the sidelines.of the verification of the aged seafarers and Next Of Kin of dead ones at the NPA Playground in Surulere, Lagos.
He said that the exercise was timely and that it would bring succour to the families of the concerned seafarers.
The former seamen and Water Transport branch president added that the union under the leadership of Prince Adewale Adeyanju would do everything possible to ensure a better welfare package for the seafarers in Nigeria
According to him, the union would continue to engage the government in ways to cushion the effects of the hardship in the country on the sailors.
The DPG also lauded efforts made by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola for the timely intervention and understanding as part of measures for the seafarers’ to embark on the verification exercise.
He also commended the former Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) Dr. Bashir Jamoh and Managing Director,Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Mohammed Koko Bello saying that their contribution for the exercise was laudable.
He assured the aged seafarers that MWUN will soon enter into another round of negotiations with government to determine appreciable payment.
Recall that for over two decades, workers under the employment of Nigerian National Shipping Line (NNSL) have been clamouring for their rights but the federal government declined to pay the benefit accrued for them .
A cross section of beneficiaries and aged seafarers’ present during the exercise commended the Comrade Adewale Adeyanju led MWUN for the intervention, even as they prayed for stability and progress of the union.
