Nigeria’s Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has thrown his weight behind the adoption of green shipping practices in Africa’s maritime sector, a move that is expected to have far-reaching benefits for the continent’s economy, environment, and global competitiveness.

Oyetola’s advocacy for sustainable maritime practices is driven by Africa’s unique geographic advantages, vast renewable energy potential, and rapidly expanding port infrastructure. He believes that embracing green shipping will not only mitigate the environmental impact of maritime activities, such as air pollution, water pollution, and climate change, but also foster economic growth and development by reducing operational costs, improving efficiency, and increasing trade volumes.

The Minister cautioned that Africa must proactively engage in global maritime policy-making to protect its interests and avoid being disproportionately affected by the impending energy transition. He noted that the shift to low-emission shipping could lead to increased operational costs, potentially undermining the competitiveness of African ports and putting pressure on already-strained national budgets.

As the International Maritime Organization (IMO) prepares to adopt new emissions reduction strategies, Nigeria is seeking a seat on the IMO Council to amplify Africa’s voice and shape global maritime policies. Minister Oyetola’s leadership on this issue is expected to have a lasting impact on Africa’s maritime sector and contribute to a more sustainable future for the continent.

By championing green shipping practices, Minister Oyetola is also promoting Nigeria’s economic diversification agenda, which aims to reduce the country’s dependence on oil exports and develop other sectors, such as manufacturing, agriculture, and services. A more sustainable and competitive maritime sector is expected to play a critical role in achieving this goal.

Overall, Minister Oyetola’s push for green shipping practices in Africa’s maritime sector is a bold step towards a more sustainable, competitive, and prosperous future for the continent.
