MWUN PG charges employers on better renumeration for workers to discourage corruption in port.

The President General of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) Comrade Adewale Adeyanju has said that if employees are well renumerated, the rate of corruption will be reduced in the maritime industry.

Comrade Adeyanju said this shortly after completion of a two-day training organised by the Maritime Anti-Corruption Network(MACN) in conjunction with Convention on Business Integrity (CBI) in Lagos on Wednesday and Thursday.

While commending efforts of the organisers, he said the training was impactful as well as enlightening on activities of government agencies in the port.

Adeyanju, who was represented at the training by Vice President General, Chris Idagbonre, added that if the workers are carried along in the scheme of things, the Anti-Corruption crusaders will have a little work to do.

He said, “The training was very impactful, it gave us better knowledge of operations in the port and the compliance level in the port. It also made us to understand the activities of the agencies in the port and how they are making it easier to do business in the export.

“This is what Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has been talking about that the port should be made easier for everybody to do business. By so doing, everybody will be happy coming to the port.

“What the PG has always emphasised is the need to be seamless operations in the port and the people who are doing this work especially the dockers, should be recognised.

“By the time you carry this people along, all these things we are talking about will automatically take care of themselves

“With what we have heard today and the lectures, I believe that when we continue like this, Nigeria will be a hub for everybody to do business.

“All what we learnt here today has been the slogan of our President General, that the port should be a better place for everybody to do business and that the people making this thing to work like the dockworkers NPA workers, seafarers, shipping companies staff should be well renumerated so that they will be happy to continuously do this work

“If you renumerate your workers well, you will have a little work to do but if they are not well renumerated, all these that we have discussed today, will not make the expected impact.”
