The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has revealed that having a high score in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) does not guarantee admission into Nigerian universities.
According to JAMB, admission decisions are based on a comprehensive ranking system that takes into account a candidate’s O’level results, UTME scores, and post-UTME scores.
This means that even with a high UTME score, a candidate may still be denied admission if they fail to meet the required standards in other areas. For instance, a candidate who scores 201 in the UTME but has a poor O’level result may not be considered for admission.
To illustrate this, JAMB provided a case study. A candidate with a UTME score of 250, but with a poor O’level result, may be denied admission. On the other hand, a candidate with a UTME score of 200, but with excellent O’level results, may be offered admission.
Additionally, universities have different admission criteria, such as catchment areas and Educationally Less Developed States (ELDS), which can also affect a candidate’s chances of admission.
JAMB’s clarification is aimed at educating candidates and parents on the admission process, emphasizing that admission decisions are not solely based on UTME scores.
