Comptroller Ben Oramalugo, the Customs Area Controller of the Seme Area Command, has emphasized the crucial role of integrity and trade in building a secure and prosperous nation. Speaking at the Redeemer’s University International Model United Nations Conference (RUIMUN) 2025, Oramalugo highlighted the importance of these values in driving national development.
According to Oramalugo, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) plays a vital role in national development, with a focus on trade facilitation, revenue generation, anti-smuggling activities, and national security. He stressed the need to support local industries, citing Nigeria’s status as a leading rice producer despite facing challenges in local patronage.
Oramalugo outlined the core mandates of the NCS, which include:
– Trade Facilitation: Simplifying customs processes to enhance legitimate trade and economic growth. This mandate is critical in promoting trade and commerce, which are essential for national development.
– Revenue Generation: Contributing significantly to national revenue. The NCS generated over ₦6 trillion last year, demonstrating its importance in supporting the nation’s fiscal policies.
– Anti-smuggling and National Security: Preventing the entry of prohibited and harmful goods while collaborating with other agencies to safeguard the nation. This mandate is crucial in protecting the nation’s security and well-being.
Oramalugo praised the leadership of Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, describing him as “the best CGC in Africa.” He commended Adeniyi’s numerous achievements and recognition, which have elevated the NCS to new heights.
