An astute maritime lawyer, Barr. Emmanuel Osuala Nwagbara has called on the federal government to promote the newly created Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy for the economic growth of the nation.
He made the call during his presentation at the official launch of the ‘Maritime Labour Voice’ Magazine by the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) in Lagos on Wednesday.
According to him, sustainable use of ocean resources, improved livelihood, creation of jobs and healthy ocean ecosystem promotion, would lead to improved livelihood.
He maintained that maritime workers play germane roles for the efficiency and effectiveness of the new ministry.
His words, ” This will have the effect of not only generating employment for Nigeria`s teeming unemployed youth, but will also generate scarce foreign exchange and in addition promote the status of Nigeria among maritime nations”
Earlier, the President General of MWUN, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju in his welcome speech, maintained that the magazine was aimed at promoting harmonious working environment that will engender industrial peace and serve as the voice of the voiceless.
Comrade Adeyanju added that the quarterly publication was birthed owing to collective efforts and ingenuity of leaders and members of the union.
He stressed that Nigeria is a maritime nation blessed with valuable water resources that contribute immensely to the socio-economic development of the country in terms of food, mineral resources and marine transport.
