By Comrade (elder) Aleakhue, John Okpono.
_Secretary General, NMNOWTSSA_
As High Chief, C/Engr Joseph Bob Yousuo (PhD), National President of the Nigerian Merchant Navy Officers and Water Transport Senior Staff Association (NMNOWTSSA), clocks 60 on August 15, 2026, the maritime community has another reason to celebrate a man whose life of service has been defined by leadership, advocacy, and unwavering commitment to Nigerian seafarers and maritime workers globally.
Born on August 15, 1966, Dr. Yousuo has over the years carved a niche for himself in Nigeria’s maritime labour space. He combines professional experience, academic excellence, and union leadership in the pursuit of better conditions for workers in the sector.
He is ITF Africa seafarer chair, ITF fair practice committee chair, Vice chairman ITF NCC, NIgeran chapter, a holder of PhD in
Industrial Relations and Human Resource management from Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Rumuolumeni Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
His academic background has complemented his work in maritime administration and labour advocacy, bringing intellectual depth and strategic thinking to his responsibilities as National President.
A Legacy of Welfare and Representation
Since assuming office, Chief Engr Yousuo’s major focus has been the welfare of seafarers in Nigeria. Under his leadership, NMNOWTSSA has consistently advocated for better working conditions, improved remuneration, and enhanced welfare for maritime professionals who remain critical to Nigeria’s economy.
His administration has also recorded significant milestones in institutional development:
1. Relocation of the National Secretariat : The secretariat was moved from a remote location to a more accessible and prestigious area in Lagos. This has enhanced the image, visibility, and administrative efficiency of the association.
2. Improved Financial Base: There has been a significant increase in check-off dues remittance. This has strengthened the association’s financial capacity and created more room to deliver on its mandate to members. Also, he has done well in the welfare and wellbeing of the Staff.
The result has been tangible improvements in member welfare — a defining feature of his tenure. For Chief Engineer Yousuo, a strong association must first prove its value by prioritizing the wellbeing and professional interests of its members and staff.
For an association representing merchant navy officers and senior staff in water transport, this focus is critical in an industry where workers face unique occupational and professional challenges.
The season seafarer’s 60th birthday comes at a pivotal time for Nigeria’s maritime industry, with growing attention on the blue economy, indigenous shipping capacity, seafarers’ training and development, and the need to strengthen local participation.
At 60, his journey offers an opportunity not only to celebrate accomplishments, but also to reflect on the responsibilities of leadership in a sector as strategic as maritime transportation.
For colleagues, Staff and members of NMNOWTSSA, the relocation of the secretariat, improved finances, and enhanced member welfare stand as clear evidence of an administration committed to building a stronger and more effective association.
Beyond statistics and institutional gains, this birthday is a celebration of service. HC Yousuo’s journey from his early years to the helm of a major maritime workers’ association reflects decades of dedication to Nigeria’s maritime workforce.
As he steps into a new decade (septuagenarian cadre), stakeholders expect him to continue deploying his experience and influence toward advancing seafarers’ welfare, developing Nigeria’s maritime manpower, and deepening indigenous participation in the industry.
For High Chief Joseph Bob Yousuo (PhD), turning 60 is more than a milestone. It is the celebration of six decades of life and a continuing journey of leadership, service, and advocacy.
As families, friends, colleagues, and maritime stakeholders celebrate him, the message is clear: his contributions to the organization and welfare of Nigeria’s maritime workforce remain a lasting part of his legacy.
