The Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has congratulated members of the Inter-Ministerial Committee in recognition of their contributions to Nigeria’s successful election into category ‘C’ of the council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for the year 2026-2027 biennium.

Comrade John Kennedy Ikemefuna, Head of Media, MWUN stated this in a statement on Wednesday.

The numero uno of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria, Comrade Francis Bunu Abi said the feat recorded so far for the country on November 28, 2025 in London, where Nigeria secured a seat on the IMO Council, was a significant impact and a milestone in the history of the country’s Maritime space and diplomatic engagements

He said that it was indeed remarkable and highly commendable and worthy of national celebration.

The MWUN PG commended the wholesome efforts of the set committee, which were a critical factor in promoting Nigeria’s maritime reforms and its capability on the global stage; thereby, strengthening Nigeria’s position within the international maritime space.

However, while Comrade Bunu, PG of MWUN thanked Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy for the achieved feat, the effectiveness of the committee members cannot also be overemphasized; recalling that the visible feat reignited the country’s commitment to the objectives of the IMO and its enhanced international Maritime cooperation; whilst also thanking the federal government of Nigeria for promoting the country’s interest within the global Maritime governance.
