Again, NLC Deputy President, Comrade Adeyanju calls for return of gangway security to block revenue loss
The immediate past President-General of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Adewale Adeyanju has lauded Nigerians on the New year for their tenacity, long-suffering and ability to withstand pressure in the face of unusual hardship, hunger and insecurity in the land in the past years, where many Nigerians have been displaced, rendered homeless and jobless.
He stated this in a press statement made public by Comrade John Kennedy Ikemefuna, Head of Media, MWUN
He added that with the menace of kidnappings across the country, herders and farmers clash, unwarranted killings, and fear of the unknown characterised with rape of women, pregnant mothers and teenagers; with high cost of living staring on the faces of Nigerians daily with traces of strife, bitterness, sorrow and anguish; Nigerians indeed witnessed a horrible phase of life in the past years; therefore, in 2026, the government must put smiles in the faces of survived Nigerians through out these years of horror and uncertainty.
Comrade Adeyanju who is the Vice President Global, International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) says Nigerians have endured so much pains, even where Christians and Muslims were either butchered, hacked or shot dead in cold blood in their worship centres, particularly in the northern parts of Nigeria, where terrorists have swelled in their numbers.
According to him, Nigerians and the common man on the streets are particularly hit with all manners of insurgency through out 2025, where hopelessness has beclouded the entire country, but in spite of all the insecurity around, Nigerians had stood firm believing in their country that someday, Nigeria would work again and rebound to reckoning to reclaim her pride of place in the comity of nations as it were.
“Nigerians had carried on with their avowed spirit of encouragement, endurance and hope that someday, a new Nigeria will emerge for all citizens to live in peace and harmony where religious tolerance would be the order of coexistence in the country in spite of our religious beliefs, political inclination, tribes and tongues, we should know that what matters is that we are citizens of Nigeria and that is our own dear country and we must not tear it apart.
He also advised that Nigerians should continue to be united in spite of the present challenges, which has come, we must to the occasion and collectively we must fight it and by God’s as Nigerians we shall prevail.
The Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress also thanked Nigerian workers for their resilience in carrying on in the face of harsh economic reality, which has significantly affected the cost of living in the country compared to their far less monthly wages. He called on the federal government to look into the wages of workers as we enter the year 2026 to make up for workers, whose sacrifice for the development of the country would not go unrewarded.
In a similar vein, the Oyo Prince called out the Terminal Operators to look into the remuneration of Dockworkers and Seafarers of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria under their employ, given the harsh economic trend in the country to review their working conditions as soon as possible, reminding the Terminal Operators of the positive roles the leadership of MWUN played during the process of concessioning the ports, recalling the input of the Union towards making the concessioning a reality as it stands today.
Comrade Adeyanju also harped on the returning of the onboard security and gangway men back to the nation’s seaports system, given the huge revenue loss being recorded yearly as a result of poor accountability of number of vessels that comes into the ports daily.
Adeyanju says that with this obvious laxity in the nation’s seaports, Nigeria will continue to experience lose huge sum of money to the pockets of unidentified individual Nigerans, urging the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy to act fast in this direction towards boosting the nation’s coffers.
He also admonished the federal government to act fast in its resolve to quelling the recurrent issues of insurgency in the country believing that the steps taken so far by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is in the right direction to bringing a lasting peace to Nigeria as soon as possible, while appealing to the government to implement policy friendly for the country that will bring about succor to the plights of Nigerians, who have suffered so much pains, anguish and disillusionment throughout the years gone for the purpose of uniting Nigerians again; believing that 2026 will usher in the much expected renewed hope agenda that would usher in economic vibrance, prosperity and development of the industrial sectors of the country and above all, the expected joy, progress and good life to Nigerians as promised the people.
Comrade Adeyanju also wished Nigerians a belated “Merry Christmas
” and a Prosperous New year.
